Ive’s leather chair is a Supporto chair from U.K. The desk was custom-made by Marc Newsom, one of Ive’s best friends and now a member of the Industrial Design team. There are no pictures of his family or design awards, only a desk, chair and lamp. Except for a small shelf system, his office is bare, with plain white walls. The front wall and door are made of glass with stainless steel fittings, just like the ones in Apple’s stores. It’s a glass cube, and the only private office in the studio. Opposite the front entrance is Ive’s office. The opaque windows prevent anyone from getting a peek inside. It’s recognizable from the outside only by the wall of large, frosted-glass windows across the bottom of the building. The studio is a large space, occupying most of the ground floor of IL2. They wanted to maintain their independence and function like an outside consultancy, which gave them more freedom to pursue their own ideas. The designers were housed away from the company on purpose. “Every piece of furniture, all the tables, the chairs, every piece of glass.” Apple’s Industrial Design group was originally housed at Valley Green 6, an anonymous-looking building a short way from Apple’s main campus. “Every single thing in that space was custom-made,” said former Apple designer Doug Satzger. In addition, everything in the new studio was purpose-built. The founder of the ID group, designer Bob Brunner ( now at Ammunition), had set up the original studio across the street to give it some independence from the rest of the company.
